Firefighter tackles New York marathon for charity
A car wash is being held at Calne fire station this Sunday (21 September) to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity.
The event is one of several being held in Calne to support a fundraising effort for the charity, which culminates with local firefighter Mark Evans running the New York marathon on 2 November.
He explained: “I’ve never done a marathon before, but I’m hoping to raise at least £2,000 for the Fire Fighters Charity. I’m up to 18 miles at a time when training now, so it’s going well. Everyone at the station has been really supportive – as well as the car wash this weekend, we’ve got a car boot sale and open day on 27 September and another car wash on 18 October.”
The Fire Fighters Charity provides help to serving and retired personnel, their widows/widowers and young dependants through the provision of sheltered accommodation, recuperative facilities, rehabilitation and therapy, as well as giving financial support to those who need it. The charity works with some 11,000 beneficiaries every year at a cost of £9 million per annum, and these services are financed almost exclusively by fundraising.
Sunday’s car wash at Calne will start at 10am, and the crew will be there into the afternoon. Mark said: “We hope to see lots of cars through the day. This is a great chance to get the car washed and help a really good cause, so please support us!”
