Fish and Chip Shop Fire
Shortly after 4pm on 28 October, Swindon’s fire crews were mobilised to a reported
chip shop fire in Gorse Hill. Upon arrival, crews were confronted with smoke and flames
issuing from the Wong Kee fish bar, which is located next to the Co-Op in Chapel Street.
The fire had taken hold of a cooking range and extract flue at the rear of the premises
but was quickly brought under control by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. One
female employee was treated for burns to her face and she was treated by fire crews before
being taken to the Great Western Hospital by ambulance.
The fire is not suspicious and was caused when a pan of oil was mistakenly heated
instead of a pan of water and left unattended. Damage was limited to the rear of the premises
and, after clean up, business can resume in a limited capacity.
Heat detectors were not fitted to the premises and this factor contributed to the
development of the fire.
