Firefighters collect for forces charity at military parade
Over £1,600 was collected for the charity Help for Heroes at this weekend’s military
parade through Wootton Bassett.
Firefighters from Wootton Bassett, Westlea and Swindon, together with fire cadets from Cricklade,
ran the collection during Sunday afternoon and presented the proceeds to Squadron Leader Peter Morgan,
from RAF Lyneham, on Monday evening (13 October) at Wootton Bassett fire station.
The parade led to a busy afternoon for Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service, as crews were also
called on to help some 20 people taken ill because of the unexpectedly hot conditions.
Wootton Bassett crew manager Mark Griffin explained: “We had both members of the public
and people actually taking part in the parade collapsing because of the heat, so we worked with
our colleagues from the ambulance service to give first aid.”
There are still opportunities to become a retained firefighter in Wootton Bassett, with cover
needed both during the day and on evenings and weekends. If you live or work in the town and would
