Town council supports Wootton Bassett recruitment campaign
Wootton Bassett town councillors will be visiting their local fire station on Monday (28 July) in a show of support for a forthcoming recruitment campaign.
Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service is looking for more men and women to come forward and help provide 24-hour fire cover for Wootton Bassett and its surroundings. Anyone fit and healthy who lives or works near the fire station has the potential to become a retained firefighter.
The current crew have invited the town council to visit the station ahead of a recruitment event on Saturday 16 August. The visit, starting at 7.30pm, will include a tour of the facilities and a drill demonstration.
Watch Manager Andy Ody said: “The recruitment event in August is really important to us, so it’s great that the town council is showing its support. I hope the councillors will enjoy their visit and then encourage people to come forward as potential firefighters.”
Retained firefighters are a vital part of Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service, totalling 60% of all firefighters in Swindon and Wiltshire. From a total of 25 fire stations, 19 stations are crewed only by retained firefighters, covering 830 square miles, or 60% of the county, through attending over 3,000 calls a year, or 40% of all incidents.
