Flash floods lead to busy day for firefighters

Wiltshire’s firefighters are hoping for a quiet night after flooding caused havoc across much of the county.

There have been over 200 ‘999’ calls for assistance following last night’s rain (12 December), which has left many properties under water, particularly in the West and the North of Wiltshire.

At the height of the floods, over 30 fire engines were simultaneously dealing with incidents. The calls to flooding in properties are now easing off, but Fire Control operators are still taking calls to drivers who are driving through deep flood water on the roads and becoming stranded.

All drivers are urged to take extreme caution on Wiltshire’s roads tonight as the forecast is for it to get much colder with the possibility of the water on roads freezing over, and to make matters worse, there is a chance of fog which will further worsen the road conditions.
