Recruitment day for Wootton Bassett firefighters

A special recruitment day is being held at Wootton Bassett fire station on Saturday (16 August) to encourage people to become retained firefighters.

Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service needs more men and women to come forward and help provide 24-hour fire cover for Wootton Bassett and its surroundings. Anyone who lives or works near the fire station has the potential to become a firefighter, subject to passing the entry tests.

Watch Manager Andy Ody hopes the recruitment event will bring forward some willing volunteers. “This is a fantastic opportunity to give something back to the community. If you work in Wootton Bassett, it would be worth asking your employer if you could provide stand-by cover in the day. We need people to provide all levels of cover, with more recruits available at more times.”

The recruitment day on Saturday will run from 10am to 2pm. Wiltshire FRS Retained Recruitment Officer Tracy Scrivens will be on hand to answer any questions about the recruitment process, and visitors can meet the crew and watch them demonstrate their skills.

Retained firefighters are hugely important to Wiltshire FRS, totalling 60% of all firefighters in Swindon and Wiltshire. From a total of 25 fire stations, 19 stations are crewed only by retained firefighters, covering 830 square miles, or 60% of the county, and attending over 3,000 calls a year, or 40% of all incidents.
