Home fire safety checks

A home fire safety check is a totally free service offered by Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service. If you contact us, and you qualify for a visit, we will arrange a mutually convenient appointment for a firefighter or community safety technician to do a personalised fire hazard assessment of your home.

We will fit free smoke alarms where required and offer advice to make you and your family safer in your home. The appointment normally lasts about 30 minutes and covers topics such as:

  • Using electricity safely
  • Cooking safely
  • Making an escape plan
  • What to do if there is a fire
  • Keeping children safe
  • Good practice – night time routine and other points relevant to you

Frequently asked questions

Q. Do you provide a home fire safety check to everyone who asks for one?

A. Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources to visit every household. We prioritise those people we consider to be most at risk – so people living alone, families with small children, the elderly, the disabled and people living in remote areas. We also prioritise high risk homes, such as thatched properties, houseboats and mobile homes.

Q. If I don’t qualify for a visit, can you still send me some information?

A. Definitely! Anyone who requests a home fire safety check but doesn’t qualify for a visit will be sent an information pack and a DVD, to help them carry out their own safety inspection.

Q. Do I need a home fire safety check if I already have smoke alarms fitted?

A. Yes. Smoke alarms will only alert you when you actually have a fire – we want to stop you having a fire in the first place!

Q. Do you need to inspect all the rooms in my home?

A. No. The fire hazard assessment is based around your answers to some simple questions.

Q. I have a friend/neighbour/relative who I am worried is at risk from fire. What should I do?

A. Talk to them and then ring us to book an appointment. If they refuse to have us visit, then ring us to discuss what actions you can take to make them safer. Don’t do nothing!

Q. What happens if I need more than just smoke alarms?

A. Our staff can point you in the direction of other agencies who can help, or arrange for them to contact you, whichever you prefer.

Q. Does Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service also provide carbon monoxide alarms?

A. In certain circumstances, but we would recommend everyone to fit such alarms, which can be bought in most DIY stores and large supermarkets.
