Core Service Specification - Fire & Emergency Support Service - Wiltshire

The British Red Cross provides a Fire and Emergency Support Service for Wiltshire in order to perform the following functions

  • Immediate Temporary Shelter
  • Emotional Support
  • Refreshments
  • Clothing / toiletries
  • Use of toilet / washing facilities
  • Use of a telephone
  • Use of a camera to assist with insurance claims
  • Support with care of children & pets
  • Sign-posting to other organisations
  • Assistance in securing temporary accommodation
  • Advice on care and replacement of damaged property

Criteria for call out

The service should be called whenever there is a need to support people in the immediate aftermath of a domestic emergency. This may be;

  • Where the home is uninhabitable / partly uninhabitable / badly damaged
  • Where people have to remain outside the property for some time
  • Where people will have to wait on scene for police, family, relatives or for the building to be secured etc
  • Whenever people require additional support to deal with a domestic emergency

People at the scene of the emergency should be asked whether they would like the service.

 

Requesting the service

  • The service can be requested through fire control
  • The incident commander in charge of the scene should make the decision as to whether the service should be requested.
Hours of the service

Monday to Thursday

7pm to 7am

Friday, Saturday & Sunday

24 hours a day

Bank Holidays

24 hours a day

The service is always staffed with two volunteers and the service aims to respond within 90 minutes of a callout.
