PURPOSE OF APPLIANCE

Fires involving flammable liquids (e.g. oil, petrol) are best dealt with by using AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) which forms a fire extinguishing film on the liquid's surface. It also has a cooling action with a wider extinguishing application than water on solid combustible materials.

The Foam Unit is mobilised for fires involving large quantities of flammable liquid, where a bulk supply of foam is required. (e.g. railway/aeroplane/vehicle fires). The vehicle carries a tank of 4,500 litres of AFFF and is also equipped with a High Expansion (Hi-Ex) Foam Generator, which can be used for fires in areas of poor accessibility. The foam expands to fill an enclosed space and smothers the fire.
