PURPOSE OF APPLIANCE

The Chemical Incident Unit (CIU) has been issued with environment protection equipment by the Environment Agency, so that Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service can reduce and control the effects of hazardous materials at incidents. This unit also carries equipment to assist at incidents where Breathing Apparatus support is required.

The Chemical Incident Unit and breathing apparatus support is contained within a Pod Unit transported by a Prime Mover. This Pod has 2 adjoining compartments, the front section contains specialised equipment for hazardous material (hazmat) support and setting up the Pod, including control panels and communication. The rear section houses operational equipment and servicing area.

EQUIPMENT ON APPLIANCE

Computer, Printer, Fax and Phone link to Control for supplying information on various chemicals.

Weather Station to identify windspeed/direction/rainfall etc. This information allows firefighters to calculate where any pollution/gases/hazmats are heading.

2 positive displacement pumps designed primarily for pumping industrial chemicals and waste products. The pumps can also deal with sewage sludge and other thick slurries with solids up to 13mm and 8mm respectively.

1 Hand Operated Chemical Pump designed for small chemical spills and is ideal for emptying damaged, leaking chemical containers into a safe container or drum.

1 Portaflex Shower Unit which is a light weight unit, designed to be carried easily by one person. It is essentially a foldaway decontamination shower unit combined with a dual purpose foot platform/carrying case.

20 Oil and Chemical binders which is a powder absorbent suitable for all types of chemicals including oxidising and highly reactive material, it has no neutralising effect on chemicals so arrangements for disposal if required.

1 x 8000 litre PVC Flexi-Dam which can hold chemicals or other types of spillage. It is designed to be fully collapsible with no rigid members and is held in a valise for ease of storage.

20 Chemical/Oil absorbent booms used for containing or blocking spills and provides and absorbent barrier around chemical drums, machinery, drains, valves etc.

4 Flat buoyancy booms which, once deployed, sits vertical in the water. Its purpose is to provide a solid barrier against surface pollutants, behind the absorbent booms.

A number of small and large drain blockers that prevent spread of contamination.
