PURPOSE OF APPLIANCE

The Emergency Support Unit (ESU) mobilises to any Emergency Services incident that requires the rescuing of persons, e.g. Road Traffic Accidents, collapsed buildings etc. It provides firefighters with the specialist tools required in these rescue situations, e.g. cutters, lifting bags etc.

The ESU is also automatically mobilised to any incident that has four or more pumps assigned to it.

MAIN EQUIPMENT ON APPLIANCE

• Type H Vacuum Cleaner
is provided for decontamination and collection of noncombustible materials which are hazardous to health e.g. asbestos

• Air Inflated Lifting Bags
are used for the rescue of trapped persons in a variety of operational situations where conventional jacking is unsuitable, e.g. soft ground. The bags are inflated using compressed airform standard breathing apparatus cylinders. The pressure used in the Air Bags is low and works on the principle that low pressures over a relatively large area will lift heavy loads.

High Pressure Air Lifting Cushions are designed for use in situations where a low pressure Air Lifting Bag would not be suitable, e.g. on extra heavy loads. They are also useful for spreading security bars which may be found at the window openings of some premises.

Thermal ARC Cutting Equipment works where high pressure oxygen is passed through hollow centre of flexible steel cable covered with plastic sleeve. When ignited, resultant flame cuts through wide variety of materials, including metals. Also works underwater.

Universal Cutter is designed to cut away large quantities of metal, concrete, masonry and stonework. It consists of an air cooled petrol engine driving a cutter disc by means of a rubber vee-belt.

Shower Unit is to ensure that decontamination facilities are available at the scene of any incident where chemicals are involved.

• Ground Monitor
is a portable, light weight and stable monitor that delivers high levels of water output.

Electrical Cutting Tools which consist of disc cutters, saws, rotary hammer drills etc.
